Wildheart, the latest album from Miguel, is grounded in R&B yet unafraid to go well beyond the scope of that genre. One of its standout tracks, “waves”, perhaps showcases this fluidity best. It’s a no-brainer, then, that Miguel chose to base a collection of diverse remixes — titled Rogue Waves — around the single.
Tame Impala’s reworking yesterday had us believing the track was a psych rock gem at its core. Now, Kacey Musgraves makes a pretty convincing case that Miguel could launch a career in alt-country if he so desired. In Musgraves’ hands, “waves” becomes a pastoral ballad, its dust and twang surprisingly very complementary to the R&B singer’s sleek croon.

Rogue Waves, which also features remixes from Travi$ Scott and RAC, is out today via ByStorm and RCA. Spotify users can stream it in full below.
