Miguel releases surprise three-song EP — listen

Following the release of 2012’s spectacular Kaleidoscope Dream, R&B crooner Miguel has limited his output to A-list collaborations and one-off releases, including duets with Jessie Ware, Janelle Monáe, and Mariah Carey, Adult Swim single “Can’t Sleep Together”, and contributions to both the Girls and Hunger Games soundtracks. Now, seemingly out of nowhere, Miguel has released a new three-song EP.

Though the effort is officially untitled, Stereogum points out that the cover art hints at this being another of the Art Dealer Chic EPs, a series of pre-Kaleidoscope releases that helped break the singer to a new audience.

The three tracks find Miguel expanding on his sultry brand of funk-laden R&B: “nwa” is a low-key jam that spins together bits of evocative soul and West Coast rap (courtesy of veteran MC Kurupt); “HollywoodDreams” is a methodical soul-rock fusion, where the vocals soar over huge, anthemic guitars; and “Coffee”, which the singer teased a few months back, is an especially deliberate slow jam,  supplemented with bits of junky EDM and strands of funk. Listen to the entire EP below.
